Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): The New Frontier of Digital Positioning in the AI Era

A growing share of searches now ends in an AI-generated answer, not a list of links. GEO makes AI engines cite your company as an authority. Here’s how it works.

SEO didn’t die. But the game changed.

Today, a growing share of searches doesn’t end in a list of blue links. It ends in a direct answer generated by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or Gemini. The user reads, acts, and clicks nothing. If your company isn’t cited in those answers, you don’t exist for that user. That’s exactly what Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, solves.

What is GEO?

GEO is the practice of optimizing your digital presence so that AI engines mention you as an authoritative source when they answer your potential clients’ questions. It’s not about ranking #1 on Google. It’s about being the company the AI cites when someone asks what solution they need. The difference seems subtle. It isn’t.

GEO vs. SEO: they’re not the same

Traditional SEOGEO

SEO builds presence in traditional search engines. GEO builds recommendation in AI. In 2026, you need both layers.

Why do AI engines choose some sources and not others?

LLMs don’t rank pages. They build answers. And to do so, they prioritize three signals:

  1. Semantic clarity. The content answers the question directly. No detours, no filler. If it takes three paragraphs to understand what the page is about, the AI discards it.
  2. Verifiable authority. External mentions, structured data, Schema markup. The AI looks for signals confirming the source knows what it’s talking about.
  3. Processable structure. Clear headings, lists, tables, questions and answers. The content has to be “readable” by a natural-language system, not just a human.

If your site doesn’t meet these conditions, it doesn’t matter how many years you’ve been online. The AI simply picks someone else.

How we work GEO at Codexia

We develop our own tools connected directly to the APIs of the main language models. We don’t work with third-party data or estimates. Our process has four stages:

  1. Generative mention audit. We analyze what the AI says about your brand today — with what words, what sentiment, in what context. Most companies have never checked this. The results are often surprising.
  2. Content architecture diagnosis. We review how your site is structured from an LLM’s perspective. Which pages have a real chance of being cited and which are invisible to generative engines.
  3. Technical and semantic optimization. We implement Schema markup, JSON-LD, entity structure, and redesigned content to maximize the probability of citation. Every change is grounded in how the models process information.
  4. Continuous monitoring. We measure your generative visibility month over month. GEO isn’t a one-off action: the models update, and your strategy has to move with them.
Does your company need GEO?

It depends on one thing: do your potential clients ask an AI before contacting suppliers? In B2B services, consulting, tech, health, legal, and education, this already happens. If the answer is yes, every day without GEO is a day the AI recommends someone else.

Frequently asked questions about GEO

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. They’re complementary strategies. SEO gives you presence on Google; GEO gives you presence in the answers people read before reaching Google. Companies that work both have visibility at both stages of the search process.

How long until it shows results?

On Perplexity, the first citations can appear in 30–60 days. On ChatGPT and Gemini, results consolidate in 90–180 days. It depends on each site’s starting point and sector.

Do I need a large or high-traffic site?

No. LLMs don’t prioritize sites by traffic volume. They prioritize clarity, structure, and verifiable authority. A site well optimized for GEO can outperform one with more visits but less processable content.

What if the AI already talks about my company, but badly?

That’s something we audit. The sentiment of generative mentions is a real, treatable metric. If the AI describes your company vaguely, incorrectly, or negatively, there are concrete actions to correct it.
